There is a well-known Korean folktale that reminds us how easily fear and misunderstanding can shape our actions. Like many stories passed down through generations, it speaks to something timeless, the need for self-awareness, humility, and calm strength in the face of confusion and chaos. It is the story of The Tiger and the Dried Persimmon.

The Story: The Tiger and the Dried Persimmon

One evening, a hungry tiger crept down from the mountain in search of food. As he moved quietly through a small village, he stopped outside a house where a mother was trying to calm her crying child.

“If you do not stop crying,” the mother warned, “the tiger will come.”

The tiger, hearing this, was pleased. He thought, people fear me. But the child kept crying. Then the mother said softly, look, a dried persimmon. The child became silent at once.

The tiger froze. He had never heard of such a thing. What is this persimmon, he thought, that a child fears more than me. He began to worry, imagining something far more powerful than himself.

A few moments later, a thief sneaked into the same house to steal a cow. In the dark, the thief jumped on the tiger’s back, thinking it was the cow. The tiger believed the persimmon had attacked him, panicked, and ran into the night, certain that he had been captured by a force greater than his own.

The Moral: Fear Ends Where Awareness Begins.

The tiger’s fear did not come from danger. It came from misunderstanding. His pride and assumptions blinded him to truth, and his imagination filled the empty space with fear. Arrogance often disguises weakness, and ignorance feeds it. When we act from pride or fear, we stop seeing clearly.

True fear is not always born from what stands before us, but from what we create within ourselves. The tiger did not face a real threat, yet his lack of understanding turned a simple sound into terror. In life, how often do we do the same? We allow worry, pride, or anger to distort our view of reality, reacting not to what is, but to what we assume or imagine.

When pride takes hold, it clouds our vision and blocks wisdom. We begin to speak before listening, to judge before understanding, and to act before thinking. This is where mistakes are made and relationships are harmed. Calm awareness is what clears that fog. It allows us to see things as they truly are rather than how our emotions paint them.

The HapKi Lesson: Calm is a Super Power

Life often seems filled with a great deal of noise. We are surrounded by stress, fear, and opinions that pull our attention in every direction except where it truly belongs, the present moment. It is easy to react before we think or to speak before we understand. When we act out of fear or ignorance, it leads to conflict, confusion, and imbalance. The tiger reminds us that when we quiet pride and listen with calm awareness, we discover peace, clarity, and strength.

In HapKiDo, this is more than a philosophy, it is practice. Every breath we take on the mat, every moment of stillness before movement, trains the body and mind to act with intention rather than impulse. Calm is not the absence of emotion, it is mastery over it. It is the point where power and patience meet, where awareness replaces reaction.

Through this training we learn that while we cannot control what life brings, we can always control how we respond. The calm spirit does not avoid difficulty, it faces it with clear eyes and steady heart. The world around us may rush, shout, or provoke, but within that noise, the centered mind remains still.

Beyond the dojang, this same discipline applies to every part of life. A calm heart in a storm, a kind word in a tense moment, or a quiet breath before we speak can change the entire direction of a day. Calm breaks the chain of anger, fear, and negativity. It gives space for understanding and for kindness to rise.

True strength is not measured by domination or noise but by control of the self. The one who remains calm in chaos carries the true power of HapKi, the harmony of energy, spirit, and purpose.

Practical Daily Application: Focus on the Breath!

When you feel anxiety rising or find yourself frustrated, pause and breathe slowly. Let your shoulders drop, unclench your jaw, and take a quiet moment to listen before you respond. This is not weakness, it is self-control. Calm breathing brings the mind back to the present, allowing reason to guide emotion instead of emotion controlling reason. Each breath is a reminder that your strength begins within you, not in what is happening around you.

Teach this same calm to your children. They learn not only through your words but through your example. Show them that real strength is not measured in how loud one can speak or how quickly one can react, but in how steady one can remain when faced with challenge. Help them understand that mastery of the self is the greatest victory any person can achieve.

Remind them, and yourself, that kindness is not a sign of softness, but of courage and confidence. It takes far more strength to remain calm under pressure than to give in to anger. When we act with patience and compassion, we show true control and clear character.

When life feels uncertain or overwhelming, remember the tiger who learned humility the hard way. The proud and fearful heart cannot see clearly. Fear and pride cloud the mind, but kindness clears it. A calm heart sees the path ahead and walks it with quiet courage.

Be a wise Tiger. Breath Deep. Be patient. Be Calm.

To be the wise tiger is to move through life with awareness and quiet power. The world may roar around you, yet your strength is found in calm. Let your words lift, not wound. Let your actions reflect kindness, not pride.
