JEONGSIN 정신 (Loyalty Chung-ui 충의)

Loyalty, Courage, and Respect are the foundations of Honor. During the three kingdoms period in Korean history (57 B.C – 668 A.D), there was a warrior class (Jung-sa) called the Hwarang. These young men lived by a code that was based on loyalty. Loyalty to one’s Lord, piety to one’s parents, trust among friends, courage in battle, and discrimination in the taking of a life. Loyalty is a character trait of an authentic Martial Artist. A Hapkidoin is a person who is loyal, allegiant, and devoted not only to their art and dojang, but also all their human relationships.

OVERVIEW

During your orange belt training, you will find that you are beginning to move smoother as your skill sets learned at white and yellow, continue to develop. You will notice that you are starting to be able to feel the subtle movements of your training partner as they try to control you making it easier to disrupt their timing, distance, and balance. In controlling the movement of your opponent’s energy with circular motion you will begin to realize that you are also part of that same circular movement (HapKi).

You will begin your exploration of one of the core concepts of Hapkido; the Z-Lock.

5th GUP “Z” & "S" LOCK (Pahlkumchi biteulgi sonmok kukki)

The Z-Lock, also sometimes called the S-Lock, is a very effective locking technique in which great care must be taken when practicing with your training partner. Remember safety first!  If your training partner taps, release the compression to prevent injury.

The Z-lock is applied by pronating the wrist while supinating the elbow joint which causes the joint to be stressed in opposite directions. While this is obviously very painful it is considered a mechanical compliant control method when properly applied.

Z-Lock points to consider;

  • Keep your training partner’s pinkie finger vertical and pointed toward his/her center.
  • A proper grip is essential! No holes!
  • Keep the forearm and elbow horizontal.
  • Keep the arm in your “area of maximum control” using the three points of contact method. (Your instructor will explain this in class)
  • Maintain your balance and structure while taking control of your opponent’s balance and disrupting their structure.
  • Be sure to utilize your stances to smoothly transition throughout your movement.

As with every other concept, method or technique, your instructor will teach you the fine points on the mat. You cannot learn it from a book or video. These descriptions and “points to consider” will help you practice and help you further develop your skills sets.

5th GUP Self -Defense Technique (Ho Shin-Sul / Hap Ki Sul)

You will begin using your Z-Lock concepts as well as continue using your Kahlnuki and escaping methods from various cloth grabs and wrist grabs. Previously all of your concept defenses were initiated by attacks from the front. At 5th Gup however attacks and holds from the rear as well as two hand attacks from the front will be introduced.

You will use Z-Lock and Arm Bar, as well as your balance breaks, stances, blocks, escapes & movement methods, together as you practice multiple variations against the following;

의복 Uibog-sool Clothing Grab Defense

  • Two hand sleeve grabs from rear (high, middle, and low sleeve sections)
  • Belt grabs rear
  • Sleeve grabs front
  • Two hand shoulder grabs front
  • Two hand shoulder grabs rear

방어Bhang gwon-sool
