Honoring Individual Journeys:

Celebrating Ryder & Nolan’s Path in HapKiDo

I’m usually on the other side of the lens, focused on capturing memories of my students’ journey. But today, I want to step forward and publicly recognize two fine young men, Ryder and Nolan.

From the very first day they set foot on my mat as young children, they each carried a spark—a genuine desire to learn and embody the principles of HapKiDo. In my 30 years of teaching, I’ve seen many students come and go, and you develop an instinct for recognizing potential. With Ryder and Nolan, that potential was apparent from the start. I knew we would reach this moment, standing here in celebration of their dedication, character, and growth.

One of the greatest principles I hold as an instructor is to treat every student with the same level of respect and commitment, but to teach each as an individual. Ryder and Nolan have always been unique in their approach to learning, each bringing a different strength, perspective, and depth of character. I’ve never compared one student to another because, to me, teaching authentic traditional martial arts is about the development of the individual, not in competition with others but in alignment with their own personal growth.

Over the years, Ryder and Nolan have consistently set an example for their peers, leading with humility, respect, and a deep focus on their skills sets and understanding. They ask insightful questions that reveal their thoughtfulness, they challenge themselves to improve with every class, and they embody the discipline that lies at the heart of traditional martial arts. In truth, they have taught me as much as I have taught them—pushing me to refine my approach and reminding me daily of the purpose of my own personal journey.

It is an honor and privilege to be their instructor, and as they continue to progress, I am confident they will carry forward the values they have cultivated here. I have no doubt that their commitment, integrity, and respect for others will guide them to become outstanding leaders in our community. Watching them grow into the young men they are today fills me with a sense of pride and humility. I am grateful for the journey we have shared and look forward to seeing all they will achieve in the years to come.

To Ryder and Nolan: Thank you for your unwavering dedication. Your journey has only just begun, and I am deeply proud to stand beside you in your pursuit of excellence.
