JMAFC is thrilled to announce that Nolan and Ryder, two incredibly dedicated young martial artists, have earned their 2nd Dan Black Belts in HapKiDo! Both have journeyed through our kids and teen programs, showing consistent dedication, respect, discipline, and humility. Today, these two young warriors have reached a significant milestone, successfully meeting all requirements for this prestigious rank.

A Unique Grading Journey

The final phase of our Black Belt grading process took place over Friday evening and Saturday morning, marking the culmination of several intense weeks of preparation. On Friday evening, eleven members of our the Jung Moo HapKiDo Kwan Black Belt Family gathered for a tea ceremony—what has become a cherished tradition. During this time, Black Belts and candidates come together to share wisdom, reflect on HapKiDo principles, and discuss martial arts both conceptually and philosophically. This relaxing, supportive environment provides mental preparation for the challenging warrior exercise the following morning.

The Dynamic Spirit Circle

The pinnacle of the Black Belt grading process is the dynamic spirit circle—a test of skill, endurance, and mental fortitude. Within the circle, candidates face an environment intentionally designed to be chaotic, disorienting, and fast-paced. Here, they must draw on their training in proper breathing techniques, posture, and resilience to manage the physical and psychological effects triggered by stress and adrenaline.

The Art and Challenge of Kyukpha - (Breaking)

A highlight of the grading is the board and brick-breaking demonstration, a powerful test of each candidate’s technical skill, focus, and emotional resilience. To succeed, students must apply precise techniques, alignment, and control over hand and foot strikes to deliver a powerful blow to a small target. This test goes beyond the physical attributes. Breaking techniques demand intense concentration, as candidates must quiet self-doubt, visualize success, and confront the fear of failure. Overcoming these challenges builds confidence and inner strength, qualities central to HapKiDo practice both on and off the mat.

Honoring Family and Tradition

Following their grading, Nolan and Ryder were awarded their 2nd Dan Black Belts in a moving ceremony. In a heartfelt tradition, they expressed their gratitude to their families by presenting them with roses and offering a solemn, kneeling bow, symbolizing respect and appreciation for the support that has guided them on their martial arts journey.

A Special Thank You

We extend heartfelt gratitude to the Black Belts and Red Belts who supported Nolan and Ryder during this milestone, providing guidance, encouragement, and camaraderie.
